Technical Manager - £60k - Buckinghamshire
The job holder will be a member of the business management team reporting to the Business Manager/Director. This is one of 5 management roles within the Business unit that together control the business unit resources to :
• win new business
• control private venture (PV) investment
• design, develop, build and deliver products and systems to time and cost
• achieve profit, turnover and cash targets
The Technical Manager is responsible for :
• developing concepts for new and future products/systems,
• providing lead engineering resource into bids,
• providing system design authorities to projects/programmes
• identifying emerging technologies that should be incorporated in to product/system development;
• technical excellence and technical oversight for all engineering activities
• identifying necessary engineering skills and determining the need for specific engineering tools to win and deliver future business
• line managing a team of customer facing engineers
• building technical relationship new or prospective clients
• maintaining technical relationship with existing clients and key partners
The role must also contribute to the development of business strategy and continuous improvement of the engineering process.
The successful candidate will be a high calibre systems engineer with a background in development of electronic and electro-mechanical systems and products with an excellent grasp of both development and support engineering principles.
He/she will have significant technical management experience, be an excellent team player and be comfortable with working autonomously to deliver the Business Unit operational and strategic objectives.

Responsibilities/Duties
Manage, supervise and develop the Technical Management team. This team is a collection of customer facing technical innovators responsible for the design authority role on projects, specialist engineering role across all projects, ensuring that technical requirements are met in the most efficient way, supporting bids and proposals, PV development and business strategy development. Activities are currently grouped as: ‘Future Systems’, ‘Through Life Support’, and ‘Product Development’.
Specific responsibilities include:
• In association with the Business Unit manager/director, produce, agree and deliver a 5 year strategic business plan.
• To create an innovative culture and spend PV effectively
• To provide engineering expertise in support of sales and marketing activities
• To provide technical leadership on bids
• Ensuring the business area has the appropriate engineering skills and processes to achieve the 5 year strategic plan.
• To promote the use of systems engineering from the earliest stages of a bid and throughout projects, and promote systems engineering principles such that project activities are pro-actively de-risked.
• To improve design requirements management and ensure designs meet customer requirements first time around
• Analysis and review of system/sub-system designs for a range of attributes (e.g. cost, performance, resilience, safety, EMC, quality).
• Review of documentation of system design and analysis of requirements traceability throughout the design.
• Provide technical consultancy to projects where specialist skill/knowledge exists from previous experience.
• To provide adhoc technical expertise to programmes/projects as required to address technical difficulties and challenges faced by the delivery team
• To develop external links between the company and relevant engineering communities, including universities and research houses and to facilitate the adoption of the latest technologies and techniques as required
• To review and propose changes to the procedures and processes in use by the company in order to improve the quality of the products and services and to reduce costs.
Supervisory Responsibility:
15-20 experienced multi-discipline engineering staff currently grouped in to 5 teams.
Contacts and Communication with Others:
• Regular contact with customers, sub contractors as the business unit’s technical expert
• Developing technical relationships with customers and key subcontractors
• Regular contact with internal project delivery teams at all levels in technical oversight role
• Regular meetings with Technical Management team members to review performance and set objectives
• Contact with Senior Management Team for Investment Appraisals, Project Reviews and Bid Reviews
Creative Development
The job holder will be responsible for :
• defining the future technical direction of the business unit to support the strategic plan
• driving development of creative business winning proposals
• ‘white board solutioneering’ to inspire customers and internal design teams
• for ensuring a safe, reliable and cost effective engineering design within the control framework laid down in Company procedures
• vision and creativity in selecting technologies, skills and tools to be investigated to enhance business unit product/system offerings
• innovative new methods and practices to secure continuous improvement in business performance.
